Tawo Town in Yongshun County was the center of revolutionary bases in Hunan, Hubei, Sichuan and Guizhou provinces. It was also one of the important revolutionary bases created under the leadership of the older generation of the CPC members, such as Ren Bishi, He Long and Xiao Ke, during the Second Revolutionary Civil War.
Tawo was also the last Red base of the CPC on the south bank of the Yangtze River after the failure of the fifth counter-encirclement and -suppression campaign. Ren Bishi, a military and political leader in the early Chinese Communist Party, called it the most important pillar in the development of the Soviet movement in South China.
